Seminoma. Section through a human testicle showing a seminoma, a malignant tumour of the testis. At centre and lower centre is the cancer (white); normal sperm producing tissue has been pushed to the top; at left is the epididymis tube in which newly formed sperm mature. The scale reference is in centimetres. Seminoma's are the commonest of the two main types of testicular cancer. They have a peak incidence in men aged 30. Seminoma's are made up of a single kind of cell (probably from cells that produce sperm). The tumour is usually a painless swelling in the scrotum. Treatment is the surgical removal of the testis (orchidectomy); early testicular cancer is curable. | |
