Aspergillosis. Light micrograph of a section of human kidney infected with the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus, causing aspergillosis. The fungal hyphae are the densely growing pink filaments. Aspergillus is harmless to healthy people; spores are usually present in the air all year round. However, patients with reduced resistance may become infected, sometimes with fatal results. People taking anticancer drugs, or immuno- suppressant drugs following transplant surgery, are at risk. Usually the inhaled spores infect the lungs where a fungus ball may develop; here the fungus entered the bloodstream to infect the kidney. PAS stain. Magnification: x125 at 35mm size | |
