Ranger 1 spacecraft model display preparations, 1964. Ranger 1 was a spacecraft launched by NASA on 23 August 1961 as part of a program to study the Moon. It was a prototype designed to test systems to be used on later spacecraft. Due to a malfunction, it only reached low-Earth orbit. After seven days, it burnt up on re-entry into the atmosphere on 30 August 1961. Photographed on 14 August 1964, as part of preparations at the Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, to put this satellite model on display at the Parade of Progress show (11 August to 7 September 1964) at Cleveland's public hall. | |
