| Cryoturbation is a geologic term referring to various types of disturbances in soil deposits, resulting from freeze-thaw processes in areas of permafrost or periglacial setting. The phenomenon is here made visible in a lacquer profile, a slice of soil obtained by the fixation, with lacquer, of a section of that deposit perpendicularly cut and most usually obtained in active pits of sand or clay extraction. The phenomena may also be encountered in older sedimentary rocks where they provide evidence of (peri)glacial conditions during the period of their deposition.
