Peruvian quipu. 18th-century pictorial description of a writing system constructed in early-colonial Peru based on a textile recording device known as a quipu. Quipus were used in a number of Andean cultures in South America, such as the Inca. The applications ranged from collecting data, to keeping tax records and recording dates. This hand-coloured engraving is from a 1750 work by Italian nobleman and Prince of Sansevero, Raimondo di Sangro (1710-1771). | |
