Great Nebula in Orion, 19th-century illustration. The Great Orion Nebula consists of two emission nebulae M42 and M43. Emission nebulae are clouds of gas and dust that glow due to the ionisation of hydrogen by hot young stars within them. These nebulae are about 1500 light years from Earth in the constellation of Orion. From a study made in the period 1875 to 1876. Artwork by French artist and astronomer Etienne Leopold Trouvelot (1827-1895). | |
