Parker Solar Probe at the Sun. Computer illustration of NASA's unmanned Parker Solar Probe (left) approaching the Sun. Originally called Solar Probe, and then Solar Probe Plus, this mission was renamed in May 2017 after solar astrophysicist Eugene Parker. Scheduled for launch in 2018, this robotic spacecraft is intended to probe the outer corona of the Sun. The mission will be carried out by NASA and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory using a solar shield for protection, and will approach to within 6 million kilometres of the solar surface (photosphere). | |
