Poor blood supply in peripheral vascular disease. Blue foot affecting an 83-year-old man with peripheral vascular disease (PVD). The change in colour of the foot is caused by poor blood supply. PVD symptoms result from inadequate blood flow through the blood vessels of peripheral limbs (usually the leg). The reduced blood flow can be caused by a thrombosis (blood clot), or a narrowing or inflammation of the blood vessels. Severe cases can lead to gangrene. Treatments include exercise, giving up risk factors such as smoking, and blood vessel surgery. | |
