HIP 13044 solar system. Computer illustration showing the exoplanet HIP 13044b (lower right) orbiting its star HIP 13044 (upper left). HIP 13044 is a red horizontal-branch star that lies around 2, 300 light years from Earth in the constellation Fornax. It is part of the Helmi stream, a former dwarf galaxy that merged with the Milky Way between six and nine billion years ago. The Jupiter-like planet HIP 13044b is particularly unusual as it is orbiting a star nearing the end of its life and could be about to be engulfed by it, giving clues about the fate of our own planetary system in the distant future. | |
