Anthropological models based on fossils from the human evolutionary tree. In the foreground is a reconstruction of the Lucien male specimen of Australopithecus afarensis. Lucien is the name given to the fossil skull AL-444, found in Ethiopia in 1991 and dating from 3 million years ago. A. afarensis lived between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago, and is one of the earliest links in the human fossil record. At far right is a Neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis), with a modern human (Homo sapiens) from a Stone Age culture to his left. To the left of Lucien are examples of other species from the human evolutionary tree. Reconstruction by Elisabeth Daynes of the Daynes Studio, Paris, France. | |
