Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), a member of the heather family, is a small procumbent groundcover shrub found around the north polar region or at high altitudes. It grows up to 30cm high on poor soils in acid moorland and tundra. The evergreen leaves are small and shiny and remain green for up to 3 years. The white or pink flowers appear in June and develop into oblate spheroid red drupes which are edible and have some medicinal properties. Photographed in September, in Reykjavik, Iceland. | |
