Germain Sommeiller (1815-1871). 1867 illustration of the French civil engineer Germain Sommeiller. Sommeiller is best known for directing the construction of the Frejus Rail Tunnel that connects France and Italy through Mount Cenis. He pioneered the use of pneumatic drilling and dynamite to achieve record-breaking excavation speeds. The 12.8-km tunnel was completed on 26th December 1870, 11 years ahead of schedule. It remained the longest tunnel in the world until the opening of the Gotthard Rail Tunnel in 1882. | |
