Pituitary gland tumour. Illustration of a section through the pituitary gland, showing a tumour (pink, lower left) of the gland's anterior (frontal) lobe. Also shown is part of the hypothalamus (across top in the brain) and the blood supply (red and blue vessels) and nerve supply (dark green) to the gland. The site of the pituitary gland is known as the sella turcica, with the gland partially enclosed by the sphenoid bone (blue). The pituitary gland (hypophysis) is located at the base of the brain behind the eyes. It is a key gland that regulates many metabolic processes that will be disrupted by the tumour. The most common tumour of this gland is a pituitary adenoma, with treatment ranging from drugs to radiotherapy and surgery. | |
