Cancer of the endometrium of the uterus. Illustration of a coronal section through the uterus (womb) showing a carcinoma (malignant tumour, yellow) as a glandular growth in the lining of the uterine wall. Endometrial cancer is one of the commonest cancers of the female reproductive tract. It is associated with women who have an excess of oestrogen hormone, particularly if progesterone levels are low. Obesity and a failure to ovulate may be a cause of raised oestrogen levels. The first symptom of this cancer is vaginal bleeding (vagina at lower centre). Early treatment is hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus). Anticancer drugs and radiotherapy are necessary if the cancer has spread. | |
