Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Light micrograph (LM) of SCC cells (pink) in the skin of a cancer patient. SCC is the second most common form of skin cancer and arises from the uncontrolled proliferation of squamous cells, flattened cells in the skin and mucous membranes. Symptoms may include a large poorly-healing ulcer. Treatment is with surgery and radiotherapy. SCC is mainly caused by cumulative ultraviolet (UV) exposure over the course of a lifetime; daily year-round exposure to the sun's UV light, intense exposure in the summer months, and the UV produced by tanning beds all add to the damage that can lead to SCC. Magnification: x 15 when printed at 10 centimetres high. | |
