Rolf Heuer (left) and Steven Weinberg (right) at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. German particle physicist Rolf-Dieter Heuer (born 1948) was the Director General of CERN from 2009 to 2015, and in his role as Director General is welcoming US physicist Steven Weinberg (born 1933) during a visit made in 2009. Weinberg, together with Glashow and Salam, in the late 1960s, proposed the initial theory of electroweak interactions, a unification of two of the fundamental forces of nature. This work won the three of them the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics. Research at CERN has helped verify many theories, including those proposed by Weinberg. Photographed on 7 July 2009. | |
