George Smoot (born 1945), US astrophysicist and cosmologist, visiting the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. Smoot works at the University of California, Berkeley, and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He shared the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics with John C. Mather for the discovery of the black body form and anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the radiation left over from the Big Bang. This discovery was announced in 1992 using data from the COBE satellite. The CMS detector is part of CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), used to carry out particle physics research including studying potential dark matter particles. Photographed on 2 February 2007. | |
