Forth Bridge construction. 19th-century view of the Forth Bridge during construction, spanning 2528 metres across the estuary of the River Forth at Queensferry, Scotland. This rail bridge has a cantilever design, the steel arches allowing sailing ships to pass beneath it. It was designed by engineers Sir John Fowler, Sir Benjamin Baker and Sir William Arrol, and was opened in 1890. Construction started in 1882. This image is dated 9 July 1889, and is attributed to Scottish photographer John Fergus. Printed by the Photophane Company. | |
