John Adamson (1809-1870), Scottish physician. Adamson was a pioneering photographer who produced the first portrait in Scotland in around 1842 using the new calotype method. As well as his work as a physician at the University of St Andrews, he was curator of the Literary and Philosophical Society Museum at St Andrews from 1838 until his death. This self portrait, dating from the period 1843-4, is a salted paper print produced from a calotype negative. | |
