Lava flow and new plants, Hawaii. Ferns colonising a lava field that has formed from a volcanic eruption. Between eruptions, the processes of erosion and colonisation by plants will break up the volcanic rock, eventually forming a rich soil that can support a large number of plants. This lava flow is from the Kilauea volcano on the Pacific island of Hawaii (with the Puu Oo crater in the background). Photographed in September 2016. | |
