Baby post-mortem portrait. The practice of photographing the dead was one of the uses of the new daguerreotype photographic imaging technique in the 1850s. The use of daguerreotypes was popularised by the advertising slogan 'Secure the Shadow 'ere the Substance Fade', aimed at preserving memories of a person that had died or of a person's youth. The large number of post-mortem portraits of babies and children reflects the high infant and child mortality rates of the period. This daguerrotype dates from around 1856-1860. | |
