Fibrosarcoma. Light micrograph (LM) of a section through a fibrosarcoma. This is a malignant (cancerous) tumour of connective tissue. A fibrosarcoma may arise from a benign fibroma, or be malignant from the start. It causes localised swelling and can quickly metastasize (spread) to other parts of the body via the blood. Treatment is with surgical removal, often combined with radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Fibrosarcoma represents about 5 percent of primary bone sarcomas but are rare, affecting about 1 in 2 million people. Survival rates are poor. Magnification: x60 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
