Lung cancer. Light micrograph (LM) of a section through a squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Squamous cell (epidermoid) carcinomas form about 25% to 30% of all lung cancers. These cancers start in early versions of squamous cells, which are flat cells that line the inside of the airways in the lungs. They are often linked to a history of smoking and tend to be found in the central part of the lungs, near a main airway (bronchus). Squamous cell carcinoma usually is diagnosed after the disease has spread. The overall prognosis for squamous cell carcinoma is poor; only about 16% of patients survive five years or longer. The survival rate is higher if the disease is detected and treated early. Magnification 40 x when printed at 10 cm. | |
