Two studies by Leonardo da Vinci of differing subjects. The first, about 1490, is a study of the proportions of the human head; the second, a study of mounted cavalrymen for the Battle of Anghiari which was added later, around 1503-1504. He sought to formulate a canon of proportions for the human body from the standpoint of Leonardo the artist rather than Leonardo the anatomist. In the accompanying text, for example, he delineates those points on the head which, when connected, form a perfect square. | |
