Malaria rapid diagnostic test. Close-up of a malaria testing device being used to test a patient's blood. The device is known as a malaria rapid diagnostic test (RDT). It detects specific antigens produced by malaria parasites. The sample of blood is added in the central well (as shown). A buffer is added to the other well (labelled 'A'), and this is drawn up a strip of nitro-cellulose inside the test strip towards the results window. Depending on the results, lines appear at the levels marked 'T' (test line) and 'C' (control line). If the 'T' line appears, the result is positive for the presence of malaria.
