Prehistoric clay statuette. Sleeping female figure, made of clay, discovered in Malta. The figure is shown naked to the waist, and clothed in a skirt decorated with incised lines and a fringe. This statuette, which bears traces of red ochre, was discovered at the Hypogeum of Hal-Saflieni, and is commonly referred to as the 'Sleeping Lady'. There are various theories as to what this figure could have represented. It may represent death or a departed ancestor, or a sleeping or pregnant woman. It may also represent 'ritual sleeping'. The Hal-Saflieni site dates from around 2500 BC. Photographed at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, Malta. | |
