At right is US government photographer Ed Westcott (born 1922). Ray was director of the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, a role she held from 1963 to 1972. Seaborg has just been presented with the Arches of Science award sponsored by the science centre. He was at the time chair of the US Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), a role he held from 1961 to 1971. Ray later served as chair of the AEC from 1973 to 1975. She was governor of Washington State from 1977 to 1981. Seaborg discovered a number of transuranic elements, and in 1944 he formulated the actinide concept for which he was awarded a share of the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
