May Gorslin Preston Slosson (1858-1943), US suffragist. Born May Gorslin Preston, she was the first woman to earn a doctorate in philosophy in the USA, studying at Cornell University and being awarded the degree in 1880. Her thesis was titled 'Different Theories of Beauty'. Her later career included being a professor of Greek and an assistant head of a school. She married in 1891, and moved with her husband (a professor of chemistry) to the University of Wyoming. After a later move to New York, she and her husband began advocating for women's rights. | |
