Mary Engle Pennington (1872-1952), US chemist. Pennington was an expert on the refrigeration of perishable foods, work for which she received the 1940 Francis P. Garvan Gold Medal from the American Chemical Society. Pennington had obtained her doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania (1895), before working at the US Department of Agriculture from 1905 to 1919. She specialised in food science and bacteriology, becoming a private consultant in 1922. Photographed in around 1940. | |
