Fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) spiracle, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This spiracle, or air pore, is part of the fly respiratory system. Air diffuses into the spiracle and circulates the body in a network of tubes called tracheae. Waste gases exit the body through the spiracles. The hairs around it prevent foreign bodies entering the system. Fruit flies have only four pairs of chromosomes and many visible traits that can be seen with low magnification, which makes them good test subjects for studies in genetics. Magnification: x700 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. | |
