St Mary's Hospital, Lacor, Gulu, Uganda. This hospital was founded by Catholic missionaries in 1959. The human figures in the hospital cross symbolise a pregnant woman. The portraits at lower right show the hospital supervisor and physician Matthew Lukwiya (1957-2000) who died while fighting the Ebola outbreak in Uganda in 2000. Next to him are the hospital's first surgeons: Lucille Teasdale (1929-1996) and Piero Corti (1925-2003), who married in 1961. | |
