American mastodon (Mammut americanum) with young in spruce woodland, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal is a proboscidean, an example of the group of animals from which elephants evolved. Mastodons were forest-dwelling herbivores, feeding on vegetation. The American mastodon lived from the Early Pliocene to the end of the Pleistocene (around 4.7 million to 10, 000 years ago). It reached shoulder heights of 2.3 metres, and had long tusks and a trunk. It was found throughout North America. | |
