Anancus arvernensis, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal dates from the Plio-Pleistocene of southern France. It is a short-legged and long-faced gomphothere that had straight tusks reaching 3 metres in length. Anancus stood around 3 metres tall, with a weight up to 6 tonnes, and closely resembled a modern elephant. It lived from the late Miocene to the early Pleistocene (3 to 1.5 million years ago). | |
