Acute monocytic leukaemia. Light micrograph of a blood smear from a patient with acute monocytic leukaemia a sub-type of acute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML). AML is a group of malignant (cancerous) bone marrow neoplasms (tumours) of myeloid precursors of white blood cells. Acute monocytic leukemia (AML-M5) is one of the most common type of AML in young children. However, the condition is rare and represents approximately 2.5% of all leukemias during childhood. This leukemia is predominantly composed of promonocytes that show moderate amounts of cytoplasm and large nuclei with fine chromatin, but without prominent nucleoli.
