Arc welding pioneers observing welding. Canadian-born US mechanical engineer Alfred E. Gibson (born c.1883) and his wife Mary Wallihan Gibson (1883-1972) were representing the Wellman Engineering Company, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. They had just received an award from the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation recognizing their scientific contributions to arc welding, especially on low-alloy high-strength steels. Alfred Gibson was president of Wellman Engineering, and had just served as president of the American Welding Society. Mary Wallihan Gibson was a graduate of the University of Colorado, Denver, UAS.
