Beaker being used to add sulphuric acid to copper (II) oxide (black) at the bottom of a test tube. This reaction will form copper (II) sulphate (blue) and water. The copper (II) oxide is an insoluble solid (black), while the copper (II) sulphate is soluble in water. A laboratory bottle of sulphuric acid is in the background. Under the new UN Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) this chemical requires a corrosive hazard label, GHS05. The pictogram warns that this strong acid (H2SO4) is extremely corrosive and causes severe skin burns and eye damage. As well as the symbol there is a signal word and suppliers provide a numbered statement (H314) that gives more information. For the result of this reaction, see image C011/4550. | |
