Ceres space tourism. Futuristic space tourism poster advertising a trip to the dwarf planet Ceres. Ceres is the largest member of the asteroid belt, a large group of rocky and icy bodies orbiting in space between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. With a diameter of 950 kilometres Ceres accounts for around a third of the mass of the asteroid belt. It is thought to have a surface consisting of a mixture of water ice and various hydrated minerals such as carbonates and clay. At its centre is probably a rocky core surrounded by an icy mantle. Ceres may also have a remnant internal ocean of liquid water under the outer layer of ice. NASA's Dawn spacecraft entered orbit around Ceres in March 2015. | |
