Aluminaut research submarine, 1966. Deep sea diving research submarine the Aluminaut, being checked over. This vessel (built by Reynolds Metals Company) was used in the search for a hydrogen bomb that was lost when two US Air Force planes collided on 17 January 1966. The nuclear weapon was recovered by the US Navy on 7 April 1966. The Aluminaut was made of aluminium, and built in 1964. It was 16 metres in length, carrying a complement (crew and scientists) of 6-7 people. The Aluminaut was retired from service in 1970. Photographed in June 1966. | |
