Luther, Gutenberg and Columbus, illustration. At left, German priest and theologian Martin Luther (1483-1546) was a major figure of the Protestant Reformation. He translated the Bible (shown in his hands) into German in the 1520s and 1530s. At centre, German printer and publisher Johannes Gutenberg (c.1398-1468) developed moveable type (in his hands). Combined with his printing press (used for his Gutenberg Bible in the 1450s), this allowed the mass production of printed books. At right, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) sailed westwards across the Atlantic and discovered the Americas in 1492 (on the globe in his hands). The map shows his ships and the islands of the West Indies. | |
