Colpidium ciliate protozoa. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of protozoa Colpidium. These single-celled organism are ciliates, being covered in hair-like structures known as cilia. They live in freshwater environments. They feed on bacteria and decaying organic matter, which they filter through membranelles in their primitive mouths, known as a buccal cavity. The membranelles, rows of fused cilia (yellow short microscopic hairs), are also used for locomotion. Magnification: x 1000 when printed at 10cm wide.
