Qarman CubeSat in radio anechoic chamber. Full-size prototype of part of the first CubeSat designed for atmospheric re-entry, being tested in the Hertz radio-testing chamber. CubeSats are low-cost nanosatellites based around standard 10-centimetre units. But the three-unit Qarman (QubeSat for Aerothermodynamic Research and Measurements on Ablation) is designed to return data on conditions at re-entry. The Hertz (Hybrid European RF antenna Test Zone) test chamber is being used to test the performance of the satellite's radio antenna. Qarman is part of the QB50 CubeSats launch, taking place in April and May 2017. This test site is operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) at ESTEC (the European Space Research and Technology Centre) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. Image published on 12 August 2015. | |
