Region around neutron star RX J1856.5-3754. Optical wide-field image showing the sky around the very faint neutron star RX J1856.5-3754 in the southern constellation of Corona Australis. The neutron star itself is too faint to be seen here, but lies very close to the centre of the image. At upper left is the variable star R Coronae Australis (80 light years from Earth), surrounded by nebulosity (blue). Above and right of this is the globular star cluster NGC 6723 (white). A neutron star is the collapsed core of a massive star. This image was obtained as part of the Digitized Sky Survey 2. Image published in 2016. | |
