MODEL RELEASED. Lung function testing results. Paramedic assessing the results of a lung function test carried out using a handheld spirometer in a general practice (GP) clinic. The spirometer (also called a peak flow meter) measures the amount and speed of air that is exhaled. Values measured include forced expiratory volume (FEV), forced vital capacity (FVC), peak expiratory flow (PEF). Spirometry is an important tool used for assessing conditions such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, and chronic obstructive airway diseases (COAD) such as bronchitis and emphysema, also collectively known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
