Lung function testing results. Handheld spirometer being used as part of a test to assess the functioning of the lungs. The results are displayed on the screen and are about to be downloaded to a computer for analysis. The spirometer (also called a peak flow meter) measures the amount and speed of air that is exhaled. Values measured include forced expiratory volume (FEV), forced vital capacity (FVC), peak expiratory flow (PEF). Spirometry is an important tool used for assessing conditions such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, and chronic obstructive airway diseases (COAD) such as bronchitis and emphysema, also collectively known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
