Light micrograph of amoxicillin (INN) crystals. Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic broad spectrum antibiotic. It acts by inhibiting the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan polymer chains during bacterial cell wall synthesis. Amoxicillin is one of the most frequently prescribed medications for the treatment of infections of the throat, ear and nose, the genitourinary tract, the skin and skin structure, and the lower respiratory tract. Amoxicillin is commonly prescribed with clavulanic acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor), as it is susceptible to degradation by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. | |
