Close-up of a male Cannabis sativa plant in full bloom. Pollen sacs are yellow. The cannabis plant is dioecious, with the male and female flowers being produced on different plants. Its surface is covered in glandular trichomes (transparent globules) that secrete a resin containing the psychoactive chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). A number of products can be made from the cannabis, or hemp, plant, including hemp fibre, medicinal drugs, marijuana, hashish and oil. It has been used as a recreational drug and medicinal plant for thousands of years. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting and chronic pain. It is also used to stimulate hunger in chemotherapy and AIDS patients and to relieve spasticity in multiple sclerosis patients. Field of view size: 20.8 x 31.1 millimetres (0.82 x 1.23 in) | |
