Epimorphosis in geology defines the phenomenon of one mineral being overgrown by another, while the crystal habitat (shape) of the overgrown mineral remains visible. In this example the cubic crystals of fluorite are overgrown by quartz, but their cubic habitat is still clearly visible. Small crystals of chalcopyrite are also seen interspersed in this specimen from an unknown location in Sachsen, Germany. For scale see coin. | |
