Charlotte Gower Chapman (1902-1982), American anthropologist. Chapman received her PhD from the University of Chicago, USA, in 1928, for her study of Sicilian villagers. She published a book Milocca: A Sicilian Village"" based on her field notes in 1971. She was teaching at Lingnan University, Hong Kong when the USA entered World War II at the end of 1941 and was taken prisoner by the Japanese. However, she was released in 1942 and returned to the US where she joined the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Chapman stayed at the CIA until her retirement in 1964." | |
