Anax junius is one of the most common and abundant dragonfly species in North America; south to Panama. It is well known for its annual migration from the northern United States, south into Texas and Mexico. It also occurs in the Caribbean, Tahiti, and Asia; from Japan to mainland China. Their habitat is usually near ponds and streams throughout most of North America. Adult green darners prey on midges, moths, mosquitoes and flies. The green darner is one of the largest and fastest extant dragonflies. It is the official insect for the state of Washington in the United States.
