Titan's atmosphere is predominantly nitrogen, with sunlight causing traces of methane to form clouds of complex hydrocarbons, with liquid hydrocarbons on the surface. The infrared image penetrates the haze, showing lower-level clouds and surface features. These images were taken from a distance of around 986, 000 kilometres, using a range of spectral filters. They were obtained on 21 March 2017, with the narrow-angle camera of Cassini's Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS). The Cassini spacecraft has been surveying the Saturnian system since 2004, with its mission scheduled to end in September 2017. |
